A Sofa Outside an Abandoned Shop Lot. Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.
Jalan Kem used to be a busy main street 15 years ago. While the terminals of Port Klang today have grown to become the country's largest port and the twelfth busiest container port in the world, the town itself is full of abandoned, burnt-out and dilapidated pre-war buildings. The flyover connecting Northport and Westport is only a few metres from the shop lots and as a consequence has devalued these colonial buildings and sucked the life from the area. Standing on the second floor of one of these buildings will give you a very close-up view of the concrete visual blight above.
Coffee shop operator Yap Yong Choon, 56, said many shops had closed down after the elevated highway opened more than 10 years ago. He said the highway had taken away the glitter from the popular Jalan Kem. “It was the busiest street then. Now you can see for yourself the unoccupied and abandoned premises’’.
